What is Passive TAP?

What is Passive TAP?

Active non-optical TAP module is a simple, cheap and efficient means of monitoring transmission network traffic. It works invisibly on the network and has no IP / MAC address which allows unauthorized access and hacking. TAP works at speeds from 1 Gb/s to 100 Gb/s, and monitoring stations receive an accurate copy of all traffic passing through the network. By installing a TAP in a transmission path, future troubleshooting is possible without the need to interrupt the transmission path.

PASSIVE TAP models

There are mainly two ways to create an active TAP.

1- Using an FBT (Fused Bioconical Taper) optical splitter or a splitter with Thin Film technology. Splitters Bioconical Taper Spused
In simple words, one fiber (signal input carrier) is divided into two fibers (two signal outputs). The percentage of light output from each can be adjusted at the fuse point. For example, light can be divided 90:10 or 80:20 to 50:50.

2-Thin Film Technology Splitters
Compared to light splitting, this technology uses light reflection caused by a semi-permeable membrane in the fiber core. The original signal is transmitted through the fiber and its reflection can be controlled.

Which type of TAP should we choose?

Passive TAPS is preferred over active TAPS and FBT splitters are preferred over TPLS for Enterprise / Data Center TAPS.
It provides complete connectivity of active FBT cables and breakout modules for data center and enterprise network use for data rates up to 100G over multimode fiber and singlemode fiber.
